STOTT PILATES®
INTENSIVE MAT-PLUS (IMP)

The STOTT PILATES Matwork Course focuses on teaching the Essential and Intermediate STOTT PILATES Matwork repertoire safely and effectively for a variety of clients, both in private and group settings. 


The approach is grounded in the STOTT PILATES Principles, incorporating recognized movement patterns and qualities while integrating the fascial system. 

Recognized and practiced in over 100 countries worldwide, STOTT PILATES provides a globally respected certification that enhances your teaching credentials and opens up international career opportunities. It is also recognized by the Deutsche Pilates Verband (DPV).

This Course will cover
 

  • The What, How and Why of the STOTT PILATES Principles and how to apply them to all exercises

  • STOTT PILATES Supine & Standing Warm Ups

  • A complete breakdown, including goals, muscular emphasis, movement sequencing - of 63 Essential and Intermediate Matwork exercises

  • Modifications to address specific alignment issues and individual needs

  • Power workout

  • Static Postural Analysis and assessment to aid in program creation

  • Incorporating light equipment including as Flex-Band®, Fitness Circle® resistance ring and Arc Barrel/Stability Barrel™ to support and intensify exercises

  • Exercise layering related to effective program design

  • Workout composition for personal and group training

  • Effective communication, observational skills, verbal cues and imagery for performance enhancement and client motivation

Requisites of Participation

  • Working knowledge of functional anatomy.

  • Minimum 30 hours Pilates classes/workouts.

  • Teaching experience is recommended

    *Applicants with a strong history of Pilates participation and/or experience instructing students/clients in another field may also be considered

Observation, Practice Teaching and Physical Review

A minimum number of hours of observation, practice teaching and physical review are required for all courses and should be completed between instructed sessions. Additional training may be required before certification. Practice teaching and physical review hours must be logged outside of class time. The practice logs must be submitted on your exam date (either written or practical exam).

Physical Review

Physical Review hours means physically performing the exercises learned in class. Physical review of the material is very important to ensure full understanding within your own body first, before attempting to teach someone else. It is also very important to ensure your body is prepared for the increased challenge at each level of repertoire as you move through your STOTT PILATES Instructor Training.

Requirements of certification:

  • 40 hours of instruction and supervised teaching

  • Minimum of 10 hours of observation

  • Minimum of 30 hours of physical review

  • Minimum of 15 hours of practice teaching

  • Total: 95 hours

Observation Hours

Observation hours can be logged during relevant course homework or after a STOTT PILATES course and can be accrued by watching a STOTT PILATES Certified Instructor/Instructor Trainer teach clients (in-person or online), as well as observing the relevant course videos through Merrithew Connect™

Practice Teaching 

Practice Teaching hours can be fulfilled by teaching STOTT PILATES course repertoire to family, fellow students, friends or clients, cueing and correcting them through a workout. Practice Teaching can be done in-person or by using a video conferencing program, such as Skype or Zoom.

INTENSIVE REFORMER (IR)

The Intensive Reformer (IR) course is designed to teach the Essential and Intermediate STOTT PILATES Reformer repertoire safely and effectively. Taught by Merrithew Instructor Trainer Deborah Degano, this program offers a proven, in-depth approach to Reformer Pilates, using high-quality equipment, materials, and a structured curriculum.

 

It is particularly valuable for those looking to enhance their skills and credentials for an international teaching career, with STOTT PILATES recognized and practiced in over 100 countries worldwide. It is also recognized by the Deutsche Pilates Verband (DPV).

IR

This Course will cover
 

  • The What, How and Why of the STOTT PILATES Principles and how to apply them to all exercises

  • Anatomy, safety & care of the Reformer

  • How to safely set up the Reformer for each exercise

  • How to adjust resistance effectively in a variety of exercises

  • STOTT PILATES Warm Up on the Reformer

  • A complete breakdown, including goals, muscular emphasis and movement sequencing of 139 Essential and Intermediate Reformer exercises

  • Modifications to address specific alignment issues and individual needs

  • Power workout

Building on your industry knowledge and the material learned in IMP or IR you learn to design and lead the Essential and Intermediate STOTT PILATES Cadillac repertoire for personal or group training settings for a range of clients.

It is particularly valuable for those looking to enhance their skills and credentials for an international teaching career, with STOTT PILATES recognized and practiced in over 100 countries worldwide. It is also recognized by the Deutsche Pilates Verband.

ICAD

This Course will cover

  • A variety of exercises performed on the Cadillac Trapeze Table through the full Essential and Intermediate repertoire.

  • To become better acquainted with the Cadillac as a tool to create complete workouts or as a complement to routines featuring Matwork and other equipment

  • To observe and experience a variety of exercises utilizing the Cadillac’s features including the Roll-Down Bar, Push-Thru Bar, Trapeze, Leg and Arm Springs

  • The goals of each exercise, biomechanics and alignment, as well as cueing and correcting for safety and effectiveness

  • How to apply the STOTT PILATES Five Basic Principles to a variety of exercises, variations and modifications

  • Familiarity with the safety guidelines and application of the equipment for a variety of clients

Requisites of Participation

  • Completion of the Intensive Reformer and/or the Intensive Mat-Plus

Observation, Practice Teaching and Physical Review

A minimum number of hours of observation, practice teaching and physical review are required for all courses and should be completed between instructed sessions at any STOTT PILATES facility. Additional training may be required before certification. Practice teaching and physical review hours must be logged outside of class time. The practice logs must be submitted on your exam date (either written or practical exam).

Physical Review

Physical Review hours means physically performing the exercises learned in class. Physical review of the material is very important to ensure full understanding within your own body first, before attempting to teach someone else. It is also very important to ensure your body is prepared for the increased challenge at each level of repertoire as you move through your STOTT PILATES Instructor Training.

Requirements of certification:

  • 25 hours of instruction and supervised teaching

  • Minimum of 10 hours of observation

ICHR

This Course will cover
 

  • Functional exercises to develop core strength against spring resistance in a variety of positions, including standing, sitting, prone and side-lying

  • How to apply the STOTT PILATES Five Basic Principles to Essential and Intermediate-level Stability Chair exercises

  • Better understanding of movement essence and exercise goals, proper execution and muscle activation

  • How to improve core stability, increase peripheral strength and enhance mobility on one piece of equipment

  • How the split-pedal option transforms exercises by challenging bilateral, unilateral and reciprocal strength and stability

  • Cues and corrections for safety and effectiveness

Requisites of Participation

  • Completion of the Intensive Reformer and/or the Intensive Mat-Plus

Building on your industry knowledge and the material learned in IMP or IR you learn to design and lead the Level 1 Essential and Intermediate STOTT PILATES Ladder Barrel, Spine Corrector and Arc Barrel repertoire for personal or group training settings for a range of clients.

IBRL

This Course will cover
 

  • How to apply the STOTT PILATES Five Basic Principles to exercises on the Arc Barrel, Spine Corrector and Ladder Barrel

  • Exercises from the STOTT PILATES Essential and Intermediate Barrel repertoire

  • To understand movement essence and exercise goals

  • How to support the spine in flexion, lateral flexion or extension, to target core and peripheral muscle groups, and to adapt exercises to specific body types

  • How to incorporate the barrels into a full-body workout and program for specific body types, postural issues and conditions

  • To develop effective communication and observational skills, verbal cueing and imagery for performance enhancement and client motivation
     

Requisites of Participation

  • Completion of the Intensive Reformer and/or the Intensive Mat-Plus

STOTT PILATES®
INJURIES & SPECIAL POPULATIONS  (ISP)

The STOTT PILATES® Injuries & Special Populations (ISP) course equips you with the skills required to address a broad range of physical challenges among your clients.

It is important to note that this course will NOT prepare students to diagnose or treat any specific injuries or conditions or prescribe exercises for these populations without consultation with an appropriate health practitioner (i.e. Physical Therapist, Physiotherapist or similarly recognized health care professional).

Completion of ISP is required for full STOTT PILATES certification.

ISP

General course objectives

  • Discuss the Pilates instructor’s role in the rehabilitative process

  • Examine the industry standards for screening clients and learn how to begin a Pilates program to safely and appropriately work with special populations

  • Discuss the three-level muscle classification system

  • Develop and be able to apply a rehabilitative approach based on current models of joint stability

  • Examine optimal and dysfunctional biomechanical patterns in various regions of the body

  • Review the most common injuries and special populations that may be encountered

  • Review appropriate exercise progressions for those injuries and special populations

  • Practice programming for specific injuries and special populations

What you will learn

  • Approaches to rehabilitating an injured musculoskeletal system

  • Anatomy and biomechanics, dysfunctions and pathologies, and exercise modifications in the: lumbo-pelvic, cervical, upper quadrant, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, ankle and foot regions

  • Pregnancy, fibromyalgia and other special conditions plus workout design

  • Appropriate modification of Matwork, Reformer, Cadillac, Stability Chair and Barrel exercises

Requisites of Participation

  • Completion of the Intensive Reformer and/or the Intensive Mat-Plus

Requirements of certification:

  • 24 hours of instruction

  • No physical review, observation or practice teaching required
